THE REGION

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards showcases the immense talent and cinematic diversity of a region covering one third of the earth’s surface and 60% of its total population. The most prolific producer of cinema in the world, Asia-Pacific is made up of a number of diverse filmmaking communities telling their stories and taking their cultures to the world in rich and absorbing ways.

From Anime and the stylised horror genres of Japan, to the original thrillers, allegorical tragedies and comedies of Korea, the extraordinary tapestry of Chinese cinema, the multifaceted industries of India, the poetry and reality of Persian cinema and visionary narratives of the Middle East. From fledgling industries to those steeped in cinematic tradition, from the classic and traditional to the experimental and cutting edge, it is all to be discovered in the cinematic output of Asia-Pacific.

Definition of the Region

The Asia-Pacific region is defined as those countries and areas of Asia and the Pacific that lie substantially between the longitudes of 30° east and 170° west – a region stretching from Egypt in the west to Cook Islands in the east, and from Russia in the north to New Zealand in the south, representing in total 60% of the world’s population and half its film.
